1950s

Throughout his performing life, Elvis was always known for contributing to the breakdown of traditional masculine and feminine standards. One area where this was obvious was his use of makeup. Early in his career, he began to wear black mascara. Later on, he used blue eye shadow and black hair dye as well. The left picture below was Elvis' first major publicity shot, and his makeup is very apparent in it.

1960s

What else could be more fitting to contribute to Elvis' use of makeup than Hollywood? Throughout Elvis' dozens of movies, he, like most actors, wears stage makeup. Elvis' image was rather masculine during the 1960s, so his makeup was not as blatant as it had been in the past. During the 1968 Comeback Special he makes a mention to his makeup when it runs from his sweating (see bottom right photo). The bottom left photo shows one of the rare times in Elvis' career that he exhibits facial hair.

1970s

The pictures below show Elvis with stage makeup. It improves his complexion, but is not the glamour makeup that he wore in the 1950s. It is important to note that he never stopped wearing makeup, it just became less blatant.
